Students from Mount St Joseph Catholic College Milperra share their sustainability initiatives and plastics project – a great example of T – TAKING ACTION!
“As a school we were looking at different sustainability practices and how we could incorporate this into our school community,” says Angelina, a student and member of the STEAM Club and Sustainability Squad.
“We are Taking Action by collecting plastics from the school community and turning them into new products.”
The plastics, such as milk and water containers, are cut down, cleaned and then shredded in our shredding machine,” continues Angelina. “We use this machine to break down the plastics into small granules then load the granules into plates which are then heated to become plastic sheets.
“We aim to use these sheets to create products which can help our community and environment – like creating pet boxes and nesting boxes for local wildlife.”
“I love being part of this project,” says another student. “I am very passionate about the environment and it’s really fun to do it with my friends and I really enjoy caring about the environment.”
“It’s not just a project,” says Angelina. “We are Taking Action, we are being stewards of creation. We are fighting for our community and the sustainability crisis. In the future we want to make the project even more local, encouraging other schools to get involved so we reduce the amount of plastic we use and increase our recycling.
“In the spirit of Mary MacKillop we need to ‘never see a need without doing something about it’.”
