Congratulations to Sr Mary-Ann Casanova PhD whose book, We Care for God’s Earth, has been jointly selected as Garratt Publishing’s Educational Book of the Year!

Sr Mary-Ann shares the award with Kathryn Robinson and her book, Know Your Bible.

We Care for God’s Earth and Know your Bible are both part of Garratt Publishing’s Living Your Faith series. The publishers said it was “impossible to choose one above the other. Therefore, the winner is actually two books!”.

“Each book has been designed to engage readers by using a variety of text types and creative imagery. Each was written with a target readership in mind – Years 5 to 8, and ESL students. Each is a perfect contemporary introduction to the Bible and Catholic social teaching.”

Sr Mary-Ann shares, “putting together educational resources is, for me, a delightful challenge. Writing We Care for God’s Earth provided me with the opportunity to reflect, distil and communicate complex and sometimes diverse content in ways that make sense to whoever picks up the book.”

Sr Mary-Ann had been very conscious that the young people and many of the teachers using We Care for God’s Earth will have only known Earth as experiencing a climate crisis. This ‘new’ phenomenon calls us to see and understand our world in new and holistic ways.

Having completed her Doctoral Studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies, researching the relationship between science and spirituality in the lives of two priests – Julian Tenison Woods and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Sr Mary-Ann is mindful of how Julian Tenison Woods communicated. His intention was to make information accessible and readable for all.

“Julian hoped ‘that instead of a difficult study, the whole process of learning will be a delightful recreation.’ (Tenison Woods 1882, p. 9) Bringing scripture, Catholic Social Teaching, science and my daily life together is something I want to share with others.”

On winning the joint award, Sr Mary-Ann is “rather proud of this achievement and proud that the Sisters of Saint Joseph continue to contribute to the education of current and future generations in all manner of ways.”
